V roku 2001 sa objavila v seriáli Degrassi: The Next Generation. Neskôr si zahrala vo filmoch Daleko od ní (Away from Her), Hra na rodinu (Playing House), V rytmu stepu (How She Move). Prelomový film v jej živote s názvom Too Young to Marry jej umožnil stvárniť hlavnú postavu, kde si ju všimli aj iní režiséri a spustila sa jej herecká kariéra. Nasledoval film Never Cry Werewolf, v ktorom si zahrala s Kevinom Sorbom. Preslávila ju najmä hlavná úloha Eleny Gilbertovej / Katharine Pierce v známom seriáli Upírske denníky ( The vampire diaries ).
