Nina Dobrev sa narodila 9. januára 1989 v Bulharsku. Keď mala dva roky s rodičmi sa presťahovala do Kanady. Jej matka je umelkyňa a otec počítačový expert. Navštevovala Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts. Okrem herectva sa venuje tancovaniu, gymnastike, divadlu,hudbe a modelingu. Hovorí plynule anglicky, francúzsky a bulharsky. V roku 2001 sa objavila v seriáli Degrassi: The Next Generation. Neskôr si zahrala vo filmoch Daleko od ní (Away from Her), Hra na rodinu (Playing House), V rytmu stepu (How She Move). Prelomový film v jej živote s názvom Too Young to Marry jej umožnil stvárniť hlavnú postavu, kde si ju všimli aj iní režiséri a spustila sa jej herecká kariéra. Nasledoval film Never Cry Werewolf, v ktorom si zahrala s Kevinom Sorbom. Preslávila ju najmä hlavná úloha Eleny Gilbertovej / Katharine Pierce v známom seriáli Upírske denníky ( The vampire diaries ).
